Chenille is derived from the French word meaning caterpillar. The caterpillar's contribution is felt in the soft fuzzy texture of chenille fabric. Chenille fabric is produced from cotton, olefin, acrylic, and even rayon. Although chenille was being produced centuries ago, it did not become popular until the 1930s, when it began being used for decorative items such as throws, pillows, bedspreads, drapery, upholstery and carpets. Chenille was so widely used, that in the 1990s an organization, The Chenille International Manufacturers Association (CIMA) was created to create and monitor the standards for which chenille fabric is to be manufactured.
